Two Seniors Earn HEAR Scholarship for Collegiate Study
Loyola Academy seniors Moira Hand and Richard Rivera have been awarded scholarships by the Health Education and Relief (HEAR) Scholarship Foundation. The foundation awards a $20,000 tuition scholarship to Chicagoland high school seniors who demonstrate commitment to their community.
Hand is a eucharist minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and at Loyola Academy. She is the recipient of the Pedro Arrupe Service Award, secretary for the Torch Club and a member of the cross country and track teams. Heading off to University College Dublin, Ireland, next year where she will study business commerce, Hand is the first HEAR Scholar to study abroad.
Rivera is the Boys Hope Scholar of the Year Award recipient and has logged over 100 hours of volunteer work at Hull House Daycare Center. In 2017, he participated in a summer service immersion trip to Guatemala, plays violin and cello in Loyola’s Symphonic Orchestra and is a member of the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, Adventure Club and Programming Club. Rivera will attend St. Olaf University in the fall where he plans to study computer science.
HEAR scholarships are paid directly to the recipient's college, in increments of $5,000 a year, for four years of higher education. Applicants need to prove they have financial need, must fulfill HEAR’s minimum academic requirements and must show that they are of outstanding character and caring, active members of their communities.
