29th Annual Ramblers Golf Outing

Despite the rain, it was a wonderful day on the links at North Shore Country Club in Glenview as alumni, parents, and friends of Loyola Academy gathered for the sold out 29th annual Ramblers Golf Outing on Monday, September 11. As we celebrate our 29th year, we want to recognize the great history of this event and the impact it has made over the years—contributing over $250,000 to Loyola’s Tuition Assistance Program!
A welcome luncheon awaited guests as they arrived and prepared for a great day of golf. Opening remarks from Advancement Chief of Staff Marty Jennings ’98 and a prayer from Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, preceded the start of the outing, which kicked off with a million dollar shot contest sponsored by Reb Banas ’81 and Mike McDermott P ’18, ’19, ’22, ’26.

Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to play games and win spectacular prizes. At holes 3 and 13, golfers tried their best to get a hole-in-one and win a VW Taos, donated by John P. Jennings ’79 and Jennings Chevrolet-Volkswagen; or a two-year, 10,000 mile lease on a 2024 BMW iX xDrive50 SUV, donated by Hanley Dawson IV ’86.

Other popular games on the course included Longest Drive on the 12th hole and Closest to the Pin on the 3rd and 13th holes for a chance to win gift certificates to the NSCC Pro Shop, donated by Rambler members of North Shore Country Club.

Players purchased raffle tickets to secure two mulligans, a sleeve of LA golf balls and a chance to win: dinner for four at etta ($800 value), donated by David Burden ’88; a four-course chef’s tasting for 8 at the one of four Ballyhoo Restaurants: Sophia Steak, Pomeroy, DeNucci’s, or Coda di Volpe ($750) value, donated by Ryan M. O’Donnell ’95 and Ballyhoo Hospitality; four tickets to the Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies ($400 value), donated by Reb Banas ’81; four tickets to the Chicago Bears vs. Carolina Panthers ($600 value), donated by Reb Banas ’81; a ZX5 Mk II driver ($500 value), donated by Jim Thanner P ’24; a RTX 6 ZipCore Tour Satin Wedge ($170 value), donated by Jim Thanner P’24; and a $200 NSCC Pro Shop credit, donated by Rambler North Shore Country Club members.

New this year, a representative from Srixon/Cleveland was on the course offering valuable demonstrations for our golfers. Srixon also offered a couple games including:
  • Longest drive contest in which golfers had the chance to donate $25 to play; the individual with the longest drive won an additional raffle ticket
  • Beat the pro contest. Again for $25, golfers had the chance to win an extra raffle ticket if they were to hit their ball inside the pro.
On the green, Reb Banas ’81, Tim Haggerty ’81, Chas Stevens ’85, and Spencer Cotton took first place in the gross competition with an even par (144). On the Peoria handicapping system, John Patton Jr ’76, Bob Patton ’83, Jamie Trail, and Alex Geiser took first with 119.

Will Forsyth ’10 had the longest drive on the 12th hole. Jeff O’Connell was closest to the pin on the 3rd hold. Erik Foster was closest to the pin on 13. Winners received a gift certificate to the NSCC Pro Shop.

Special thanks to Rambler members of North Shore Country Club for hosting us! Their generosity and efforts provided us with the best possible experience. We would also like to recognize the impact and generosity of our sponsors, including Silver Sponsors Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation (Reb Banas ’81) and McDermott Construction (Michael D. McDermott P ’18, ’19, ’22, ’26). Everyone who supported this wonderful annual event has paved the way for us to reach our goal of providing one year’s tuition for one student at Loyola Academy through our Tuition Assistance Program!

Save the date for next year’s outing on Monday, September 16, 2024!
