The Loyola Academy Dance Program offers a variety of opportunities for students to continue their dance training both during and outside the school day. Dance fulfills physical education and fine arts graduation requirements and is available all four years. Open to all levels and backgrounds, the program explores ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, hip hop, musical theater, choreography, and performance.

  • Dance 1 & Health

    This entry-level course introduces students to the fundamentals of contemporary, modern, ballet, and jazz dance, focusing on basic technique, movement vocabulary, and choreography. It promotes personal and kinetic wellness in alignment with Physical Education goals, and includes fitness testing. The Health component covers essential concepts for lifelong wellness, including disease prevention, healthy behaviors, and access to reliable health resources.
  • Dance 2

    This course builds on Dance 1, focusing on intermediate technique in ballet, jazz, and contemporary/lyrical, while introducing styles like hip hop, musical theater, and modern. Students begin exploring choreography and engage in fitness training to enhance performance. Dance 2 students may have the opportunity to perform in the Spring Dance Showcase. Prerequisite: Dance 1 & Health or teacher approval.
  • Dance 3

    This intermediate/advanced course for juniors and seniors builds on technique in contemporary/lyrical, ballet, jazz, and modern dance, with opportunities to explore additional styles like hip hop and musical theater. Emphasizing choreography and performance, students create original works for the Spring Dance Showcase and study dance history and production. Field trips or service opportunities may be included. Repeatable for credit with teacher approval. Prerequisite: Dance 1 & Health, Dance 2, or teacher permission.
  • Honors Dance

    This advanced course for juniors and seniors is designed for dancers with strong training in contemporary, jazz, ballet, and modern, as well as experience in choreography. Students explore additional styles like hip hop and musical theater and take a lead role in choreographing and directing the Spring Dance Showcase. Field trips or service opportunities may be included. Repeatable for credit with teacher approval. Prerequisite: Dance 1 & Health, Dance 2, Dance 3, or teacher permission.
Orchesis Dance Company

This after-school activity meets weekly to choreograph and prepare for the student-led Dance Concert in February. Students create and teach their own choreography, with all dance styles and experience levels welcome. Participants also have the opportunity to take part in the Illinois High School Dance Festival and State Showcase.
