Northshore Concert Band Concert: Festive Beginning

    Leemputte Family Theater
Celebrating the new partnership between Northshore Concert Band and Loyola Academy, Festive Beginning marks the Band’s subscription debut at the Leemputte Family Theater. Dmitri Shostakovich’s rousing Festive Overture raises the curtain with a grandiose ceremonial fanfare followed by sweeping, effervescent melodic lines. In his Slavyanskaya Symphony — a work not heard in the United States until the fall of the Iron Curtain — Boris Kozhevnikov quotes folk melodies from his hometown, the ancient city of Novgorod, with pensive lyricism and radiant vitality. The second half of the program is packed with American favorites, beginning with Morton Gould’s spirited American Salute, based on the Civil War-era song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Mysterium by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon provides momentary repose, evoking the mystery of how music moves us with combinations of melody and rhythm reflecting spoken language. The jubilant and cinematic final movement of Howard Hanson’s Romantic Symphony brings the program to a dazzling finish with flourishing woodwinds and valiant brass. Tickets are available here.

Evil and the God of Love

    Leemputte Family Theater
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?”

So the philosopher David Hume presents the classic 'problem of evil.' For Christians, this is no mere logical puzzle. It is a challenge to our relationship with a God who we are convinced is not only all-powerful, but all-loving. How can we love God, and know ourselves to be loved by God, amid all the evils of the world? Fr. Stephen Fields, SJ (Georgetown University) will provide a Catholic perspective on how to confront this perennial problem.

Sponsored by the Lumen Christi Institute, this event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served at 5:30 pm. The talk will begin at 6:15 pm & conclude by 7:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. You can register here.
