St. Paul Miki

Japanese martyr and eloquent seminarian
1564–1597
Born into an affluent family near Oska, Paul Miki joined the Jesuits in 1580 and became known for his eloquent preaching. Miki was only months from being ordained when he was arrested and crucified with 25 other Catholics during a period of Christian persecution in Japan. He renewed his vows on the morning of his crucifixion and preached his final sermon from the cross.
