As captain of the Rambler basketball and baseball teams, Ernie led Loyola to Catholic League championships in both sports. Later, at the University of Illinois, he pitched the Illini to the Big Ten championship. Ernie and the Illinois team were invited to make a barnstorming tour of Japan, a unique distinction in those days.
