Loyola Academy offers the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and the Global Seal of Biliteracy to Loyola juniors and seniors who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in languages other than English. The languages that are assessed using Advanced Placement scores are French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

What is the State and Global Seal?
The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and the Global Seal of Biliteracy are awarded to high school students to certify that they are biliterate in English and one or more world languages. A biliterate person is able to read, write, speak, and understand another language in addition to English at the Intermediate High or greater proficiency level on the scale set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Students demonstrate their proficiency in English by their ACT or SAT English score.

Benefits of the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and the Global Seal of Biliteracy include college placement, possible college credit, scholarship opportunities, and career opportunities. The seals are a distinguishing mark on a student’s college application and resume.

How is it acknowledged?
Students earning the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy receive a seal on their diplomas and a notation on their transcripts. Students earning the Global Seal of Biliteracy receive a certificate at the school’s honors assembly. Most students who qualify for the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy also qualify for the Global Seal of Biliteracy.
