Br. James Small, SJ, who entered eternal life on March 19 at the age of 104, was a beloved presence at Loyola Academy for generations of Ramblers. His life was a long and faith-filled journey of service.

Br. Small joined Loyola Academy in 1969, beginning his ministry as a carpenter and later becoming known throughout our community as a gifted artist and a man of extraordinary humility. Over the course of more than four decades, he quietly transformed lives—through his generosity, his deep love for God and others, and his art, which helped to raise more than one million dollars for tuition assistance. In his gentle way, he lived the Ignatian call to find God in all things, and his kindness left an imprint on every life he touched.

If you have photos of Br. Small that you would like to include in a collage that will scroll before Mass, please share them here.

Together in sorrow we mourn this departed member of the Loyola family.
