Teachers Collaborate with Students for Evanston Art Exhibit

Gallery Over the Rainbow (OTR) in Evanston invited Loyola Academy teachers to participate in a special teacher and student art show in February. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, February 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. OTR is an organization that works to find independent and affordable housing for people with physical disabilities. A portion of each piece of artwork sold is donated to OTR’s Resident Service Program to increase the quality of life and independence of their residents.

“It is a valuable experience for artists to show their work to wider audiences, so when Over the Rainbow invited our participation, we embraced the opportunity,” says Visual Arts Department Chair Colleen Aufderheide. “Over the Rainbow seeks to better the lives of others, so the mission fits with our goals as Ignatian educators to challenge our students to be women and men for others.”

Aufderheide collaborated with junior Elizabeth Balentine and Visual Arts Teacher Leslie Yatabe worked with senior Ethan Heinz on this special project.

“One of the goals of the Honors Photography program at Loyola is to develop the student’s techniques and artwork for presentation,” explains Yatabe. “I believe that display of artwork is important for a student. The student feels that his or her work is valuable and in this case, the work contributes to a worthy cause. Being charitable and open to grow is part of our mission as a Jesuit school.”

Both Aufderheide and Yatabe found the experience working with students to be inspiring and rewarding. “We are thrilled to be showing our work along with Lizzy and Ethan, who continuously bring vision, passion and dedication to the Visual Arts Department.”
