Seven Loyola Seniors Participate in Chicago Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting
On Friday, March 3, seven Loyola Academy students participated in the annual meeting of the Chicago Society for Neuroscience at Loyola University Chicago, with the hope of enabling high school students of color interested in science to engage with scientists of color who are succeeding in the field. Chaperoned by Physics Teacher Ms. Sandra Azubuike, the following Ramblers attended the conference: Guadalupe Vasquez '23, Rachel Barrientos '23, Olivia Meyers '23, Asmerome Tecabo '23, Joseph Okere '23, Yafet Fissaye '23, and Flor Pallchizaca '23.
The conference featured premier talks from four neuroscientists Dr. Mario Penzo, PhD; Dr. Theanne Griffith, PhD; Dr. Arif A. Hamid, PhD; and Dr. Carl Hart, PhD. Students then had the unique opportunity to speak with Loyola University professors and graduate students during a discussion session covering a variety of topics including racism in neuroscience, brain-computer-interfaces and their neuroethical implications, and other research topics. The day concluded with a special tour of Loyola University Chicago.
"During the trip to Loyola University, students were given the opportunities to talk to various Loyola professors about their research. Students were able to see research related to hearing, infancy & facial recognition, and taste. Students returned back to the conference area and were able to observe the keynote speaker's presentation which was related to the effect of laws on the public's perception of drugs. Students were also able to listen and research presentations by graduate students from various universities," said Ms. Azubuike.
