Despite scattered rain and unseasonably cool temps that finally warmed in the late afternoon, it was a wonderful day on the links at North Shore Country Club in Glenview as alumni, parents and friends of Loyola Academy gathered for the 28th annual Ramblers Golf Outing on Monday, September 12.
Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, enjoyed lunch with several members of Class of 1954 before the outing, including Robert E. “Bob” Ward, R. James “Jim” Seeberg, and Walter A. “Wally” Ovaert.
A welcome from Vice President of Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98 and a prayer from Fr. Greg preceded the start of the outing, which kicked off with a million dollar shot contest sponsored by Reb Banas ’81 and Mike McDormott.
Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to play games and win spectacular prizes. At holes 3, 8, and 13, golfers tried their best to get a hole-in-one and win a VW Taos, donated by
John P. Jennings ’79 and
Jennings Chevrolet-Volkswagen; or a two-year, 10,000 mile lease on either a 2022 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe or a 2022 Volvo XC90 T6, both donated by
Hanley Dawson IV ’86 and
The Patrick Car Group.
Other popular games on the course included Longest Drive on the 12th hole and Closest to the Pin on the 3rd hole for a chance to win gift certificates to the NSCC Pro Shop.
Players purchased raffle tickets to secure two mulligans, a sleeve of LA golf balls and a chance to win: four tickets to see the Northwestern Wildcats, two tickets to see the Chicago Bears, and four tickets to see the Chicago Cubs, all donated by
Reb Banas ’81; a four-course chef’s tasting for 10 at either
Sophia Steak or
Pomeroy, donated by
Ryan M. O’Donnell ’95 and Ballyhoo Hospitality; one personal training session with
Delos Strength, donated by
Brandon M. Groth ’07; and a $200 NSCC Pro Shop credit donated by
Rambler North Shore Country Club members.
On the green, Pat Hake '09, Ryan Brennan ’09, Chris Wehmer ’12, and Jack Begley ’09 took first place in the gross competition. On the Peoria handicapping system, Dan Powell ’92, Tom Downey, Mark Murnane ’85, and Jim Burke took first.
Sam Dirck, guest of Chris Cagadas ’98, had the longest drive on the 12th hole. Patrick Dunham was closest to the pin on the 3rd hold, and Reed Webster, guest of Artie Oliver, was closest on the 13th. Winners received a gift certificate to the NSCC Pro Shop.
We are grateful to our golf outing hosts, Reb Banas ’81 and Rambler members of North Shore Country Club. Their generosity and efforts provided us with the best possible experience. We would also like to recognize the impact and generosity of our sponsors, including Silver Sponsors Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation (Reb Banas ’81) and McDermott Construction (Michael D. McDermott P ’18, ’19, ’22, ’26), whose contributions have paved the way for us to reach our goal of providing one year’s tuition for one student at Loyola Academy through our Tuition Assistance Program! We recognize the substantial contribution that this event has made to the Tuition Assistance Program over the past twenty-seven years—totaling well over $250,000.
Save the date for next year’s outing on Monday, September 11, 2023!
