Ramblers Return to School

The 2022–2023 school year is all about new beginnings! We proudly welcomed a new president, Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ; our newest Ramblers, the incoming freshman Class of 2026; and we are beginning to enjoy our new McGrath Family Performing Arts Center, home to the Leemputte Family Theater.
Freshman Orientation—August 14–16
Loyola welcomed incoming freshmen with an immersive three-day orientation that began with Mass and parent programming on Sunday, August 14. In his homily, Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, emphasized the importance of Catholic Social Teaching, critical thinking and eloquentia perfecta, a Latin phrase meaning “perfect eloquence” that is used in the tradition of Jesuit rhetoric to promote “a good person speaking well for others.”

On Monday and Tuesday, Loyola’s newest Ramblers returned to campus for orientation activities that included a welcome assembly, iPad training, school tours, learning to pray the Daily Examen and more. Freshmen had the opportunity to get to know the school and their classmates while learning about Loyola’s mission, the life and legacy of St. Ignatius, and what it means to be a part of the Rambler tradition. They took their ID photos, found their lockers, enjoyed ice breaker activities in classrooms and walked through an abbreviated class schedule to meet their teachers and master the layout of the building. Notably, the Class of 2026 made history as the first class to gather in Loyola’s new McGrath Family Performing Arts Center!

After lunch in the cafeteria on Tuesday, the afternoon brought a friendly dose of competition and built camaraderie as freshmen competed in the House Games. Rodriguez House won with 135 points; Ricci House came in second place with 129 points; and Pro House came in third with 102 points. The houses will continue to compete all year before a house champion is named. A final session titled “How to Get Involved @ Loyola” wrapped up a wonderful freshman orientation experience.

Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Orientation—August 17
Upperclassmen returned for orientation on Wednesday, August 17. In addition to walking through an abbreviated class schedule, returning sophomores, juniors and seniors enjoyed lunch with their class, participated in a Summer Experience session, where they had the opportunity to share and reflect on their summer adventures, and attended a welcome assembly, where school leaders shared important reminders and updates for the year ahead. “Whatever you do, do well and do good,” advised Fr. Greg, who emphasized to upperclassmen the importance of finding opportunities to get involved and be leaders.

The 2022–2023 school year officially begins on Thursday, August 18.
