Loyola Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15, and all month long at Loyola there were opportunities for students to participate in fun activities and learn more about Hispanic culture and history.
A decorated front lobby and beautiful flags hanging in the main hallway greeted Ramblers at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in September. Bulletin boards throughout the school were transformed to mark the occasion. One, crafted by the student group UniDos, showcased information about Hispanic countries such as Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay and more. Another gave students the opportunity to share their experience being Latinx. And yet another, created by the Spanish Honors Society, was dedicated to learning about notable accomplishments of a variety of Hispanic women and men.

The Spanish Honors Society also decorated doors dedicated to individuals chosen for their accomplishments in math, science, social studies, counseling and languages to name a few.

In collaboration with UniDos, Campus Ministry celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting students and their religious traditions each week.

Students then had the chance to make their own folk art on Wednesday, October 13, during a flex-period craft activity sponsored by Student Activities. Ramblers designed their very own Mexican mirrors with bright colors and intricate patterns to celebrate an art tradition that dates back to the 1500s. Later in October, Dia de los Muertos will be honored by making sugar skulls.
