Hellenic Alumni Association Tailgate Supports Current Students

At Loyola Academy’s Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 2, the Hellenic Alumni Association hosted its annual tailgate, which raises funds to assist students of Greek descent in obtaining a Jesuit education. Members were thrilled to reconnect and resume this beloved tradition, which began in 2015, after a hiatus last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We chose this type of gathering since it is an excellent venue to enjoy camaraderie while sharing traditions,” says Dr. George D. Tsonis ’88, who explains that Greeks celebrate major holidays, especially Easter, by roasting lambs and sharing food. “Over the years we have increased the amount of items we cook and have expanded the staff that worked together to bring the event to fruition. We have enjoyed excellent weather, down pours, excessive heat, but have always had outstanding fellowship.”

The Hellenic Alumni Association raises funds to enable Greek students to benefit from the values and resources at Loyola Academy, while also strengthening members’ own relationship with The Academy years after graduation. “Many of us played football or soccer or swam and so celebrating a sporting event is quite fitting,” continues Tsonis, whose own Loyola experience was made possible by the generosity of donors. “I greatly benefited from the financial aid Loyola provided for my family, and I definitely wanted to give back to our school.”

Steve P. Mikuzis ’93 initially hatched the idea for Loyola’s Hellenic Alumni Association and says the group hopes to provide the same opportunities for upcoming generations of Greek American students as it had for students like himself and Tsonis. “While I did not appreciate it during high school, I look back now and realize that my experience at Loyola Academy laid the foundation for who I am today. I am a better man for it,” he says. “Our hope through the scholarship is to provide the same experience for similarly situated Greek Americans to attend a school where you are taught to pursue your life’s ambitions but also to pay it forward.”

Many thanks to this group of dedicated alumni for their enthusiastic support of Loyola Academy through their continued generosity and goodwill!
