Loyola Celebrates Spirit Week 2021: Hollywood!

This year's Spirit Week theme, "Hollywood," set the tone for a week of dress-down days with fun themes: "Beach/California Day" on Monday, "Jersey Day" on Tuesday, "Pajama Day" on Wednesday, "Disney+ Day" on Thursday, and "Loyola Deck-Out Day" to close out the week on Friday. A dunk tank, inflatables on the football field, karaoke in the caf, and a photo booth were just some of the activities hosted by the Student Activities Office to energize students throughout the week.
A rousing Rambler pep rally took place outside in Sachs Stadium on Friday, October 1, and featured the talents of the Ramblerettes, Loyola Cheer, choir/acapella, drumline, LA Step Team, Loyola Academy Marching Band, and more. Seniors Ashley Voss and Andy Kelly served as emcees. Throughout the hour-long assembly, energy was high as music blared over the stadium speakers and students, sitting in the bleachers and on the track, cheered on their friends and classmates. Tug-of-war contests between fall sports teams were a crowd favorite, as were the free t-shirts thrown into the stands.

The rally was dismissed at 2:30 p.m., leading Ramblers into a spirited homecoming weekend. Later that evening, the Class of 2025 danced the night away at the annual Freshman Luau, a Hawaiian-themed party hosted by the student group Insignis. Held outside on the Piazza courtyard, Loyola’s newest Ramblers made great memories and bonded as a class.

On Saturday, October 2, the varsity football team took on the Marist Redhawks in a close homecoming battle that ended with a 33–21 Loyola victory. Notably, special teams trio of Eddie Dreher ’22, Ryan Craddock ’23, and Michael Baker ’24 perfectly executed a fake field goal from two yards out that secured the win. Quarterback Jake Stearney ’23 totaled more than 350 yards of total offense. The Ramblers are now 6–0 on the season and undefeated in their last twelve games, dating back to the spring season.

Before the game, Loyola’s Hellenic Alumni Association hosted its annual tailgate and lamb roast, which raises funds to assist students of Greek descent in obtaining a Jesuit education. Many thanks to this group of dedicated alumni for their generosity and goodwill!

Donned in their semi-formal wear, sophomores, juniors and seniors returned to campus on Saturday evening to celebrate the close of Spirit Week with a beautiful homecoming dance in the East Gym. For safety and to aid with social distancing, each grade was assigned a timeframe to attend the dance: sophomores from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m., juniors from 8:45 to 10:30 p.m.; and seniors from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m. In addition, this year non-Loyola students were not allowed to attend the homecoming dance.

Homecoming 2021 was a wonderful week for Loyola students, faculty, and staff! We acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the Students Activities Office in organizing and preparing so many wonderful events and activities, all while maintaining the proper health and safety measures for our students during this time.

Go Ramblers!
