The Classes of 1970 and 1971 Celebrate Their 50th Reunion

Members of the Classes of 1970 and 1971 gathered to celebrate their 50th Rambler Reunions over a fun-filled weekend on September 10 and 11. Last year’s gathering restrictions prevented the Class of 1970 from celebrating in person, so they quickly pivoted to a Zoom celebration in 2020. This year, both classes were invited to campus to mark the very special occasion of their 50th reunions.
The reunion weekend kicked off on Friday with golf and a classmate-only reception. Alumni from the Class of 1970 enjoyed a round of golf followed by a cocktail party at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette. Rambler alumni from the Class of 1971 headed over to Hackney’s on Lake in Glenview. At each reception, former classmates traded stories and laughs, recounting their days spent at the Academy in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

On Saturday, the Classes of 1970 and 1971 received special recognition between quarters of the Loyola vs. St. Rita varsity football game (final: LA 37–St. Rita 7). The ’70 and ’71 grads also enjoyed a VIP tour of the school and a pregame tailgate with classmates and friends.

Following the game, Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, celebrated the 50th Reunion Mass in the Chapel. The names of classmates who have passed away were read aloud, and their legacy was honored with a quiet moment during Mass. Special thanks to Tom O’Donoghue ’70 and Jim Murphy ’71 for serving as readers and current student Julia Swanson ’22 for delivering a beautiful reflection.

Next, '70 and ’71 alumni took class photos in the bleachers at Sachs Stadium to commemorate their reunion before heading off to the official class party in Foley-O’Donnell Athletic Commons, located at the main entrance to the football field. Vice President for Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98 welcomed alumni and their guests before dinner was served. Alumni enjoyed a beautiful evening with music, great food and lively conversation. After dinner. Fr. Ken Simpson ’70 led a prayer and toasted to the Ramblers who were present and honored those who couldn't make it that night. VP Jennings provided the group with an update of the many great things happening at Loyola—from athletics to faith formation and college readiness. His update highlighted Loyola’s strengths and gave a well-rounded look at the Academy that these two classes built the foundation for.
