The Bowman Scholars Program Kicks Off a New School Year

Loyola Academy held its first meeting of the Bowman Scholars Program for freshmen and sophomores on Monday, August 30, and juniors on Tuesday, August 31. The program was established in 2020 to provide programming and assistance for high-achieving, first-generation-to-college students and is named for Sister Thea Bowman (1937–1990), a Roman Catholic religious sister who was an educator, missionary disciple and advocate for cultural awareness and racial harmony.
Over the course of these two days, dozens of student members gathered in the Marillac Room to kick off the new school year and hear from school leadership about important resources available to them from the Counseling Department, the Principal's Office, the Library and more. 

Qualifying students are identified during the admissions process and invited to apply for the Bowman Scholars Program at that time. Throughout their time as a Bowman Scholar at Loyola, students attend annual retreats, monthly programming to promote academic success, leadership training, private tutoring, individualized ACT preparation, team-building activities, service projects and more.
