Ignatian Jubilee Year 2021–2022

The Ignatian Jubilee Year, which will be celebrated by the Jesuits worldwide and by the Loyola Academy community, commences on Thursday, May 20, 2021. This date is the 500th anniversary of a cannonball shattering the legs of St. Ignatius at the battle of Pamplona in 1521. Often referred to as his “cannonball moment,” this traumatic injury marks the beginning of Ignatius' spiritual journey and the great conversion of his life from soldier to servant of Christ.
During his convalescence in Loyola (1521–1522), in the Autobiography Ignatius tells us that, ‘thus his brother and all the others of the house knew from the change outwardly that there had been a change in his soul inwardly.’ (10) Further on in the Autobiography, Ignatius says that he had come to see ‘everything in a new way.’ (30)

This moment thus had a physical and spiritual impact with great consequences, not only for Ignatius himself, but for all after him who have drawn from Ignatian spirituality in their own faith journey, and for the Church at large. This conversion moment will be celebrated throughout the upcoming Ignatian Jubilee Year. The motto of the celebration is, “To see all things new in Christ.” It highlights that this year is also an opportune time for us to be renewed by the Lord himself.

In a letter to the Society, Superior General of the Jesuits Arturo Sosa writes of this Jubilee Year: “May we be inspired to have the openness of heart that we need to receive the Holy Spirit who wants to gift us the audacity of the impossible.”

This Jubilee Year invites us to rediscover the life of St. Ignatius. There will be several opportunities that the universal Society is offering globally to bring us together into the Ignatian Year, beginning with an international prayer service on Pentecost Sunday, May 23. This one-hour prayer service will be shared via livestream broadcast at 7:00 p.m. CST. Join and pray with us at Ignatius500.global/live.

Additionally, the Loyola Academy community is planning activities and experience so that we may all enter into the spirit of this Jubilee Year. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, learn more at https://www.jesuits.org/spirituality/ignatian-year/.
