Ignatian Service Learning Virtual Symposium: Conversations Celebrating Civic Engagement

As a culminating event of the Ignatian Service Learning (ISL) courses, all ISL program students participated in an evening of conversation on Wednesday, April 28. In sessions organized by course and the three service learning pathways, students discussed what they learned about service, social issues and their commitment to justice over the course of the year. The unique virtual forum enabled parents and families to partake and celebrated the year of service learning and civic engagement, despite the ongoing pandemic.
“The symposium was an opportunity to reflect on, discuss, see, hear and engage with peers and parents about the civic experiences, service learning themes and societal questions that arose within this historic year of learning,” says Ignatian Service Learning Program Director and Theology Teacher Dr. Timothy Martin.

The evening opened with a message from Director of School Culture Mr. Chris Penna and Dr. Martin about the uniqueness and importance of being engaged with Service Learning during this challenging year of COVID.

Then, student panels were divided by class and pathway into one of two sessions: session one (6:15 to 7:15 p.m.) and session two (7:30  to 8:30 p.m.).  Students  shared their reflections, themes, and insights they gained from the particular service pathway they chose earlier this Spring—either direct service, public discussions on social justice issues or designing a project for social impact. The student-led panels included a few minutes at the end for questions and discussion with the audience.

Service learning is a teaching methodology that combines classroom instruction with meaningful and relevant community service. It enhances the academic rigor of our curriculum, helps meet critical community needs and encourages Ramblers to assume leadership roles in academic and civic endeavors while living out their call to be women and men for others.
