Intramural Bags Tournament: Hundreds of Ramblers Join the Fun

This past month, Loyola Academy brought back its intramural bags tournament that lasted a span of eight days before crowning new tournament champions. Adhering closely to health and safety guidelines, Mr. Chris Ackels, who leads the intramurals program, and a team of student leaders are dedicated to continuing fun, in-person and socially distant activities for all Ramblers.
“The bags tournament was the perfect pandemic tournament. It was socially distanced, safe and a ton of fun,” says Ackels, who reports that every intramural event this year has seen more sign ups and more involvement than the same events in prior years. “I think that speaks to just how much our students are yearning for interaction, for their friends, for fun and for competition. Loyola has done an amazing job of getting students in the building safely. Continuing the intramural program has allowed us to take the next step, not just 'get them here,’ but allow them to really thrive and have a blast while they're here.”

Over the course of eight days, more than three hundred students participated in the tournament’s five hundred games, which took place everyday between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the East Gym. Boards were set fifteen feet apart to ensure players were distant at all times.

Winners were crowned for each grade and alpha split. Congratulations to the following champions:

Senior A-K: Owen Boos and Mary Kerrigan
Senior L-Z: Charlie Radtke and Daniel Reischl
Junior A-K: Matt Hjorth and Foley Hayes
Junior L-Z: Mikey Regan and Matthew O'Brien
Soph A-K: Cooper Ahlfors and Kyan Gibbs
Soph L-Z: Dylan Svets and Andrew Newton
Frosh A-K: Davino Douvalakis and Lucas Holubar
Frosh L-Z: David Pezza and Kenny Langston

The tournament was made possible by the generosity of several students and members of the LA community who donated sets of bags. Special thanks to Declan Dunham '21, Hayes Flanagan '21, Danny D'Arrigo '21, Mrs. Susie McGovern, physical education department chair, Mr. Jeremy Schoenecker, associate athletic director, and The Ellingsen Family (Jon '12, Daniel '15, and Michael '20) which created a custom set of LA bags.

Ackels hopes to see familiar faces at the next tournament and encourage new students to join to meet new people, make new memories and be the next champions to take home the elite intramural t-shirts.
