Faculty Panel Addresses Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at LA

The Ignatian Service Learning (ISL) Program recently hosted a panel of Loyola Academy faculty members on the topic of diversity, equity and inclusion and creating a more just community at LA. Faculty speakers included Language Teacher Mrs. Tania Pineda, School Counselor Ms. Rosanna Suh, and Visual Arts Teacher Mr. Keith Brown. The panel was moderated by ISL students Alex Brennan ’21, Amiaya McCord ’21, and Angelica Milkie ’21.
The purpose of the discussion was to create an open dialogue and address the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities for making Loyola a more just and anti-racist community. After introducing themselves, faculty members fielded a series of questions from students that encouraged participants to think and reflect: 
 
  1. What have you observed or experienced of racial injustice/inequality or other injustices at LA?
  2. How do you define racism? What does it mean to be anti-racist for you?
  3. What are the things we can do as a community to help all students feel welcome? Can you share 1 or 2 action items you have found most helpful?
  4. Comment on the student summer Instagram account “True Colors.”
The panel illuminated a diversity of perspectives and served as a foundation for ongoing conversation. To view a recording of the discussion, click here. 
 
Loyola’s Ignatian Service Learning Program takes the service experience into the classroom—enabling students to learn about social justice issues in academic courses across the curriculum, apply their new knowledge to real-life situations through community service and then engage in reflective exercises, discussions and projects to process the experience.
