North Shore Coalition for Drug-Free Communities Receive Federal Grant

The North Shore Coalition for Drug-free Communities is proud to announce that it has received a federal Drug-Free Communities grant of up to $625,000 over 5 years to implement evidence-based substance use prevention programming throughout New Trier Township.  The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) announced the Fiscal Year 2020 grants in December for the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program.

Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, DFC-funded coalitions engage multiple sectors of the community and employ a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.  The North Shore Coalition for Drug-Free Communities will join 732 other community coalitions across the nation to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use.

The North Shore Coalition for Drug-free Communities (NSCDFC) is a new partnership between local public and private schools, government agencies, community-based organizations, parents, community members and fire and police departments.  The mission of the North Shore Coalition for Drug Free Committees is to reduce the use of e-cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and other substances among youth in the communities of New Trier Township, consisting of Glencoe, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette, and Winnetka.  The coalition will accomplish this mission by building and sustaining a safe and drug-free community in which our youth feel protected, confident, and empowered to make healthy choices.

The Drug-Free Communities grant will allow the NSCDFC to provide a variety of services and programming for middle and high school students, parents of those students and the community as a whole, regarding substance use prevention.  Some examples include educational webinars, presentations, training and materials on current drug and alcohol trends, positive coping skills, peer pressure refusal strategies and support on identifying signs and symptoms of substance use along with referrals to treatment, as needed.  The NSCDFC will be able to collaborate with local law enforcement on alcohol and tobacco compliance checks for local retailers and recognize businesses who are doing their part to prevent underage drinking and tobacco use.  Also, the coalition plans to develop a coordinated system to share all the substance-free resources and social opportunities that exist at the township’s many youth-serving organizations.
