Classics Club Guest Lecture Explores "The Archaeology of Democracy"

Loyola Academy’s Classics Club hosted a guest lecture on Monday, November 2, featuring Dr. Laura Gawlinski on the topic of “Voting in Ancient Athens.” Dr. Gawlinski, associate professor and chair of the Department of Classics at Loyola University Chicago, where she teaches ancient Greek, ancient art and archaeology, and mythology, spoke to Ramblers about the archaeology of democracy and answered questions about voting and government in antiquity.
An archaeologist who has worked at the excavations of the Athenian Agora for the past twenty five years, Dr. Gawlinski focuses her research mostly on Greek religion and is currently writing a book about the production and sale of clothing and other dress items in and around the Agora, for which she has also written a guide book. She works with the American School of Classical Studies as a senior advisor.

“We have been trying in Classics Club to come up with things that we can do together while apart, given the situation we're all working under this year,” explains Latin Teacher Amanda Pagnotta, who moderates the Classics Club and helped organize the lecture. “This year, we decided to reach out to Loyola University Chicago since we have a relationship with them for our upper level dual credit courses. Dr. Gawlinski was kind enough to volunteer to speak with us on a topic that was incredibly timely to our nation's interests. I think that we together showed our communal intention to be open to growth, intellectually competent, and members of a community of civic responsibility and discourse with our fellow man. I'm so delighted that Classics Club was able to foster this moment of togetherness in a time when our divisiveness is highlighted in every news story.”
