Loyola Celebrates Two National Latin Exam Scholarship Winners

Recent graduates Jonathan Merchan ’20 (Stanford University) and Derek Damasco ’20 (University of St. Thomas) were awarded prestigious scholarships from the American Classical League based on their performance on the 2020 National Latin Exam in the spring. Each recipient was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, renewable as long as the awardee continues to take Latin and/or Greek language classes in college.
Only high school seniors who received the highest distinction on the advanced level exam in the spring were eligible to apply. Of the nearly 150 scholarship applicants from thirty one states and three countries, only sixteen scholarships were awarded—two to students at Loyola Academy! This is a significant achievement for our students and our classical languages program as each winner represents outstanding achievement in the study of Latin.

Both Jonathan and Derek were students of Dr. William H. Lowe, classical languages teacher, Classics Club moderator, and Certamen coach.

The American Classical League celebrates, supports, and advances the teaching and learning of the Greek and Latin languages, literatures, and cultures and their timeless relevance. Learn more at https://www.aclclassics.org.
