Story Time! English Students Record Readings of Favorite Children's Books

To help grade school teachers transition to e-learning this spring, Ramblers in the English classes of Mrs. Tammy Butvilas were given a unique assignment: to video themselves reading one of their favorite children's books or poems to share with their favorite grade school teachers.
“As part of our e-learning journey, I would like us to remember that we are women and men for others: leaders in service,” Mrs. Butvilas encouraged her students in the introduction to the project. “Compared to pre-K and elementary teachers, it is easy for me to teach you remotely. These are difficult times for teachers of young children. Maybe we can help them!”

Students were asked to choose their favorite book or poem from grades pre-K through 5 and record themselves reading on their phone or iPad. Once approved, Ramblers emailed the video to their favorite elementary school teacher to be shared with their students.

Clarissa Caushaj '23, for example, chose Muse’s First Spring by Lauren Thompson; Aaron Skokan ’21 selected The Biggest Snowball Fight by Angela Shelf Medcaris; Omaru Konneh '21 picked Dog in Boots by Gregory Gormley; Gina Li '23 chose The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey;  and Aidan Madden ’21 selected Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion.

The assignment enabled students to practice valuable public speaking and presentation skills— they were evaluated on criteria such as volume, clarity, fluency, expression and posture—and become comfortable with video recording techniques that will no doubt serve them well in an increasingly digital world. Most importantly, the project provided these students an opportunity to virtually connect with their former teachers and current grade school students—a meaningful gesture in these challenging times.
