PLAYERS TO WATCH

LOYOLA RAMBLERS

Tyler Flores Sr RB

The revolving door at running back continued Friday as Flores was the primary ball-carrier against Mount Carmel. He ran 13 times for 58 yards. Both were season-bests for Flores, who missed the last nine games last year with a knee injury.

Brandon Svets Jr DL

Another junior rookie on defense, the 6-5, 195 end caused the Caravan plenty of problems in his first significant amount of action this season. He had nine tackles, two sacks and one quarterback hurry.

Marty Auer Jr DB

Like Svets, Auer made a name for himself against Mount Carmel. He intercepted his first pass of the season in the first half and blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt late in the third quarter to keep the game tied at 14-all.

Mike Williams So DL

The 5-11, 220-pound interior lineman finished with four tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Jack Coolidge Sr OL/DL

The 6-3, 205-pounder is another two-way player on the line.

EJ Talarico Jr RB/DB

The 5-9, 150-pounder is a playmaker when he gets the ball in his hands.

SAINT IGNATIUS

Declan Callahan Sr LB

Callahan is a 6-2, 180-pound outside linebacker.

Mofolarin Walter-Johnson Sr OL/DL

The 6-2, 245-pounder plays interior lineman on both sides of the ball.

Elijah Williams Sr LB/DE

Williams is another big body on the defensive side of the ball at 6-2 and 215 pounds.

NOTES

A year ago this week, the Ramblers stood 2-2 before beating Saint Ignatius 21-14 in overtime in Chicago. Loyola lost the following week to drop to 3-3. Everybody knows what happened next. The Ramblers ripped off eight wins in a row to capture the Class 8A State Championship. ... Like last season, the Ramblers had their opportunities to beat Mount Carmel. Like last season, turnovers played a key role in Loyola's 17-14 loss. The Ramblers turned over the ball four times, the last one set up the Caravan's game-winning 34-yard field goal with no time left in the fourth quarter. "All of it was self-inflicted," Loyola Head Coach John Holecek said. "To lose like this makes you sick." ... Loyola forced two turnovers but was unable to capitalize on either one. Both possessions ended in a three-and-out. The Ramblers totaled 247 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per play. Junior quarterbacks Perrion McClinton and JT Thomas split time under center. McClinton scored Loyola's first touchdown on a 5-yard run at the 11:14 mark of the second quarter. Both quarterbacks struggled throwing the ball, finishing a combined 5-for-19 for 117 yards and three interceptions. Senior receiver Matty Mangan had three catches for 109 yards. "We needed a change of pace, a change of momentum," Holecek said of the decision to sub in Thomas after halftime. "JT is a good player, and we wanted to give him a chance. That doesn't mean we are giving up on Perrion." ... Defensively, the Ramblers gave up 368 yards, an average of 6.5 yards per play. Senior linebacker Anthony Kozlowski had a team-high 14 tackles. Junior linebacker Daniel Naselli finished with 10 tackles, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble. Down 17-14 late in the fourth quarter, Junior defensive lineman Brandon Svets made a tackle on fourth-and-four to force a turnover on downs with 1:44 remaining in the game. The Ramblers turned over the ball two plays later, leading to Mount Carmel's game-winning field goal with no time left. "He's a heck of a player," Holecek said of Svets. "He's a little skinny, but he's long and a great athlete. He's only going to get better. I believe he will be a big-time prospect."... Saint Ignatius assistant coach and Loyola alum Charlie Dowdle (Class of 2012) was one of the best athletes to play for the Ramblers. A former football and water polo player, Dowdle went on to play football at University of St. Thomas before a brief run in the NFL. He's in his third season with the Wolfpack. They went 10-4 and advanced to the Prep Bowl final in his first year. Saint Ignatius finished 6-5 last season and qualified for the IHSA state playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. ... The Wolfpack lost nine starters on offense. The defense, which allowed an average of 12.7 points a game last year, returned some standouts. Saint Ignatius enters Friday's game on a two-game losing streak. Both Benet and Marmion are 4-0. This is the Wolfpack's first home game since Week 1. ... Loyola returns to CCL/ESCC Blue play next week when the Ramblers host Brother Rice in a rematch of last year's Class 8A State Final. It's Homecoming for Loyola.
