Loyola Celebrates the Start of a New School Year with the Mass of the Holy Spirit

The Loyola Academy community celebrated its annual Mass of the Holy Spirit on Monday, August 19, marking the first day of the 2019–2020 school year. The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a longstanding tradition among Jesuit high schools and universities, dating back to 1584. It provides students, faculty and staff a moment to pause, pray and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the upcoming year.
During the Homily, Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, reminded students to prioritize the mission of Loyola Academy. “Lest you forget, we will give you reminders all along the way of the mission. That’s my job, that’s our job together—to encourage one another to remember to live the mission.

“…So as you walk these hallways on these first days, be reminded of the core of that mission: to build up this community that belongs together. Every one of you belongs here. We chose you to be here. Every day we ought, together, to recommit to being this community of kinship—this community that takes care of one another and builds up rather than tears down.”

Fr. McGrath asked the senior class to serve as leaders and examples to underclassmen of what it looks like to live the mission of Loyola.

“Live the mission. Pay attention to your gifts. Open yourself up to something new.”

The Mass of the Holy Spirit was streamed live on RamblerStream, Loyola's free and HD window to Masses, athletic events and more. Watch the Mass here.
