Young Alumni in College Learn How to Navigate their Early Careers

On Tuesday, August 6, young alumni gathered to learn tips and techniques to help them stand out among their peers when applying to coveted internships or to their first full-time jobs. Leading the discussion was Kay Wigton McBrearty, current parent, career coach and founder of Waterville Partners, who provided the group with tools to navigate the early stages of their careers.
Topics ranged from managing stress while applying to jobs to crafting and delivering an effective elevator pitch. Her interpretation of confidence was especially insightful: “You’re not 'just' a student or potential employee. You have a story to tell and strengths to share. Personally, I believe that the word ‘just’ isn’t helpful in projecting your story with confidence. Many people use words like this which undermine their own credibility. It’s a simple little word, but it doesn’t speak with confidence. You want to speak confidently about yourself when you pitch yourself to someone. Make sure what you say is important.”

McBrearty kept the workshop interesting by allowing alumni to participate in interactive activities like a self reflection, elevator pitch practice and even informational interview preparation.

“The pressures of finding a job, getting that premier internship or simply standing out in the crowd are all part of the challenges our young alumni face entering their careers,” says Loyola Academy Vice President of Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98. “We hope that through these types of workshops, our alumni can pick up something valuable to take with them on their journey and capitalize on the great Loyola network as they seek out those opportunities.”
