PLC Hosted Alumni Leaders for Early Career Advice

On Wednesday, June 19, just under 100 Rambler alumni gathered at LUXBAR in the Gold Coast for the program “Early Advice - Tackling Career Ambitions as a Young Professional” hosted by Loyola’s President’s Leadership Council (PLC). Attendees heard from fellow Loyola alumni who have succeeded in their respective fields, earning the distinction of 40 Under 40 from various publications. They shared their advice on balancing friends, family and social obligations as young professionals.
The evening began with a networking reception followed by an introduction and welcome by Loyola Academy Vice President of Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98. Panelists included Jim Hennessey ’97, co-founder of Oak Street Real Estate in partnership with Marc Zahr ’97; Genevieve LeFevour ’99, shareholder, Johnson & Bell Trial Lawyers; Peter Lee ’97, founding partner of Summit Trail Advisors; and Kevin Willer ‘92, partner at Chicago Ventures.

Debbie Mokéléba ’12, an Immigration Project Assistant at Sidley Austin LLP, moderated the panel discussion and asked questions such as: what leadership skills do you believe are important but also the most difficult to develop as a young professional?; How have you embraced risk-taking throughout your career?; and what lessons about management did you learn on your way up the ladder that you apply in your current position?

“The event was extremely helpful in regards to connecting with all age ranges of business,” says Jack Penn ’14, who just celebrated his 5-year class reunion. “It gave me an opportunity to receive invaluable advice and also share a tip or two throughout the night. I am so proud to be apart of the Loyola Academy community. There is something really special about LA and the people associated with it. Everyone is willing to give back to the community - whether in forms of service, mentorship or just lending a hand anyway possible - and I am excited to continue to get back involved with the community!”

Loyola Academy’s community allows for alumni to connect with others whether it be for personal, business, or networking purposes. Using the community’s resources may help give you an advantage for a business referral, a new job opportunity, or an introduction. Marty Jennings ‘98 says, “I was inspired by the enthusiasm and pride that was present in the room that night. A room full of Ramblers all seeking out this night to grow both personally and professionally within this great network. An accomplished panel willing to share their journey in hopes of helping other alumni build upon their careers. It is these unique Loyola experiences, that make being a part of this network so special for us all.”

This event was presented by the President’s Leadership Council (PLC), a diverse group of Loyola Academy alumni who serve as ambassadors for the Loyola Academy young alumni community. The purpose of the PLC is to advance the Loyola Academy mission while providing opportunities for faith development, service offerings and networking and professional development for the Loyola Academy community.
