Time Lines Community Art Project

Time Lines is a community art project conducted by Studio 2: Art and Social Change Ignatian Service Learning students. Inspired by the socially engaged artwork of Tonika Lewis Johnson, the student artists looked at what students all have in common at Loyola and decided to make a project around the commute of students coming to Loyola.
They looked at the method, time and distance students travel and how that impacts their lives. Members of the Loyola community were encouraged to engage with the art project, adding a tack on the map to represent where they live.

In socially engaged artwork, the artists collaborate with a community to create art that seeks to make social change.  In our case, that is embracing Loyola's goal of having students feel known and loved while at Loyola through kinship with one another,” says Fine Arts Department Chair Colleen Aufderheide

In addition to a series of artworks, the Studio 2: Art and Social Change students will be hosting several workshops engaging students in dialogue about the artwork and the broader questions it raises of time-management, stress and equity.

Ultimately, the students hope to build community by elevating and representing the individual stories of students who have different experiences getting to Loyola, but commonly share in its mission.
