Day of Service Encourages Freshmen to Live the Mission

Members of the Class of 2022 set out the morning of Monday, April 1, to dozens of volunteer sites across the Chicagoland area for Loyola’s annual Freshman Day of Service. “The purpose of the day is to immerse our freshmen in the mission of Loyola Academy and to remind them of the importance of being women and men for others,” said Campus Minister Mr. Lyle Baier, who organized the day.
“By living out this call, our freshmen recognize their ability to impact their neighbors,” he continued. “Most importantly, these experiences change the way they see themselves and others.”

Throughout the day, freshman Ramblers performed volunteer tasks that included everything from playing ping pong and line dancing with elderly residents to packing food and preparing lunch at food pantries.

Freshman Hannah Sachs was on location at Chicago Lawn Childcare where she helped teachers in preschool classrooms. “I learned that all of the families at this facility were below the poverty line and the kids use this preschool as a safe space to learn and have fun,” she said. “I really loved this experience because I realized that these kids who live far away, have different role models and have different opportunities are in fact very similar to me when I was that age. This helped me expand my perspective and broaden my viewpoint on our neighborhoods.”

Seichi Shinozaki ’22 spent the day at the Museum of Science and Industry chaperoning a field trip for students from St. Mary of the Lake School. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “It made me feel connected with the students and think back to a time when I used to be the student that had to be chaperoned!”
