2019 Celebration of Champions Honors Loyola Football Program

The inaugural Celebration of Champions event on March 23 drew a crowd of over 150 Rambler alumni, parents, coaches and fans to honor the legacy of Loyola Academy’s football program. Following cocktails and supper by the bite, WGN TV’s Mike Lowe ’97 hosted a panel discussion featuring Head Coach John Holecek and some of the greats from Loyola football history including Adrian Autry '94, Jim Boyle '81, Richard Devine '61, Charlie Dowdle '12, Dan Kozlak '04, Mike Miller '70, Hobie Murnane '75 and Tommy Nute '16.
“The evening was a celebration of the great history of this program and an opportunity to share stories of the past and present Rambler greats who have inspired us all,” says Vice President of Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98, who explains that 70% of Ramblers annually compete in a sport at Loyola Academy. “The relationships created over these four years are some of the strongest bonds alumni continue to carry with them.”

Former players from all eras of Loyola football—spanning 70 years—were present at the event which, for many in attendance, had the feel of a reunion among friends.

“Seeing generations of alumni throughout the night highlighted the common bond present in many of our athletic programs,” Jennings continued. “Each generation has a desire to represent the great tradition of Loyola Academy, believes in the mission of serving others and has an incredible respect for the coaches and mentors who helped carry this legacy from generation to generation.”

Proceeds from the event helped to support the Jarett Romanski '94 Scholarship, which provides tuition assistance for one or more Loyola students each year who demonstrate genuine financial need. Jarett was a captain and member of the 1993 State Champion football team. He was a leader, scholar and a terrific representative for his teammates.  View this video to learn more.

“The event itself had significant relevance above and beyond football,” says Adrian Autry '94, who was a guest on the evening’s panel and a close friend of Jarrett’s. “Keeping Jarrett’s name relevant through the endowment contributes to the school and the value the community puts on relationships. Jarrett was a guy that was friendly with everybody and such a leader. He really does exemplify the type of student and person that Loyola Academy is known to educate and prepare for a successful life. In part, Jarrett is a significant reason I keep active and engaged with Loyola Academy. The relationships that I made during my time at school are lifetime friends.”

Vice President Jennings says he looks forward to additional celebration events in the future when he plans to bring together different affinity groups and continue to celebrate the legacy of many Loyola programs, athletes, coaches, and supporters. Stay tuned.
