Mock Trial Team Captures Howlett Cup for Fourth Consecutive Year

For the fourth year in a row, and fifth time overall, the Loyola Academy Mock Trial Team captured first place at the Howlett Cup Competition!
The competition attracts talented teams of students from a number of Chicago’s Catholic high schools including Loyola Academy, St. Ignatius College Prep, Christ the King, Cristo Rey Chicago, Cristo Rey Waukegan, Fenwick and Mt. Carmel. For students, it’s a wonderful opportunity to gain experience in front of a real judge and a jury of attorneys and other legal professionals.

Since the tournament’s inception in 2014 by Conor J. Heaton ’96, the winning title has been dominated by Loyola Academy with championships in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. St. Ignatius won in 2015.

For the past six years, Loyola’s team has been led by head coach Mark A. Javier ’97, supervising investigator at the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). Loyola graduate parent Erica Dillon and alumni John A. Ouska III '73 and Catherine C. Howlett'02 assist Javier as coaches. Notably, Catherine is the daughter of the late Judge Michael J. Howlett Jr. for whom the competition is named.

I have had the great honor of serving as a coach to some of the most talented students I have ever met,” says Javier as he announced his retirement as head coach. “During the first quarter of the past six years, Loyola Academy has been my second home. I have made the drive to Wilmette like clockwork, as I did over twenty years ago. And just like twenty years ago, I have been given a life-changing experience.”
