Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J., the Superior General of the Jesuits, has announced the four apostolic preferences for the global Society of Jesus for the next ten years. These four areas of concentration will help to guide the Jesuits and our companions in ministry in our shared mission. Fr. Sosa's announcement represents the culmination of a long process of discernment which has involved every Jesuit community and province around the world.
These apostolic preferences have been approved by Pope Francis. The apostolic preferences are:
Discernment and the Spiritual Exercises
Walking with the Excluded
Caring for our Common Home
Journeying with Youth
As Fr. Sosa notes: "The Preferences give a horizon, a point of reference to the whole Society of Jesus. They capture our imaginations and awaken our desires. They unite us in our mission. The new Preferences are four areas vital for our world today. The Society of Jesus will pay special attention to them in the next ten years."
It is important for us to prayerfully consider these apostolic preferences and ask how they inform and challenge our work here at Loyola Academy. At our core, we are a Catholic, Jesuit school and our mission is, "to form women and men for meaningful lives of leadership and service in imitation of Jesus Christ." All that we do must support and serve that central mission. These apostolic preferences can help us a great deal in our shared discernment.
