Cryptocurrency 101: What Is It and Why Should You Care?
Cryptocurrency consultant and educator, founder of Velas Commerce
Can you relate to this statement? You’re not alone! If you’ve been baffled by Bitcoin and other digital currencies such as Ethereum and Litecoin, you won’t want to miss out on this opportunity to learn about all things crypto from Hannah Rosenberg, the founder of Velas Commerce, a cryptocurrency consulting and training company.
You’ve probably heard about cryptocurrency on the radio or read about it in the news. Unlike “fiat” currency (physical money such as the U.S. dollar, which a government has declared by fiat to be legal tender), cryptocurrency is a digital asset that is secured with cryptography (encryption) and can be exchanged like money.
Join us as Rosenberg gives us a crash course on cryptocurrency, shares her perspective on the implications of a technology that changes who and how we trust, gives us a global perspective on a borderless technology, introduces us to Chicago’s “crypto ecosystem” and reflects on what the rise of cryptocurrencies means for our city. You’ll be crypto-conversant by lunchtime!
is an e-commerce web developer, economist, educator and entrepreneur with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is passionate about monetary theory and alternative currencies and became an early cryptocurrency adopter and enthusiast in 2012. In 2014, Rosenberg was one of the first cryptocurrency experts to be certified as a Bitcoin Professional by C4, the Cryptocurrency Certification Consortium.
