Mark A. Javier '97

Attorney, the Javier Law Firm
February 2016
Service and leadership are the threads that weave together the professional and philanthropic journey of Mark A. Javier ’97. “The greatest gift I received from Loyola Academy is the overwhelming sense of service,” reflects Javier, now a Chicago-based attorney with his own criminal defense practice, the Javier Law Firm, P.C.

Javier received his juris doctorate in 2006 from the John Marshall Law School and served as an assistant state’s attorney in Cook County and then as an assistant general counsel at the Illinois Department of Public Health before opening his own law office. He is an undergraduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago where he studied finance and marketing.

Javier recalls an important lesson from his four years at Loyola, “Loyola’s commitment to teaching the shared values of service and respect for all...has allowed me to serve the public with great passion and understanding.” Trusting his passion to serve, Javier has embarked on a meaningful path that is just beginning to unfold.

He is a founding member of the National Asian and Pacific Islander Prosecutor Association and the Filipino American Lawyers Association, currently serving as the president of both organizations. In addition, he is a committee member and investigator for the Chicago Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Committee and sits on the board of several councils including the Secretary of State’s Asian Advisory Council and the Chicago Chapter of the Asian American Advancing Justice. “To serve others in the name of Jesus...is a constant theme in my life and profession,” he reflects.

As a student at Loyola, Javier played basketball, attended service trips and participated in Kairos, Life! Be in it! and the Asian Youth Club. These experiences exposed Javier to realities beyond the neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago, where he grew up and broadened the scope of his perspective. “Loyola prepared me through the diverse range of people I had the opportunity to meet and befriend,” he explains. “Loyola gave me the chance to connect with so many different viewpoints.”

Today Javier is teaching current students to explore and confront their own perspectives in much the same way. He coaches Loyola’s mock trial team, which competes annually in the Howlett Cup, a tournament named in memory of Judge Michael J. Howlett Jr. for Chicago-area Jesuit high schools. In 2014 Javier led the team to victory, clinching the inaugural Howlett Cup. Javier also holds a seat on the LA Bar Association steering committee. Commenting on the strong connection he maintains to Loyola, Javier says, “There is a Loyola pride that I have always seen in our alumni, and I have always felt it, too.”
