Guidance Department Home Page
Introduction
The Guidance program at Loyola Academy supports and nurtures students throughout their academic career. The functions of the Guidance Department are threefold:
Academic - Counselors receive and interpret ineligibility reports, progress reports, and quarter and semester grades. Also, they facilitate staffings for students after
long term illness or as needed.
Personal – Counselors serve as resource for students with any presenting concern. Topics addressed include stress from academics, peer pressure, family and friend
relationships, and course selection. Individual meetings with the counselor are encouraged by the counseling staff and can have a tremendous impact
on a student’s well-being. Additionally,
the Guidance department works with outside referrals to ensure proper support is given to students, both academically and emotionally.
Formation facilitator – Ideally each counselor works with same student caseload for four years and serves as mentor for that group of students. The student groups
are approximately twenty five per period. As a formation facilitator, the counselor sees their caseload twice each week and leads discussions and presentations
relevant for the students.
To help support our Guidance Counselors and the Formation Program, Loyola provides extra resources in Health & Wellness and College Counseling.
[Formation home page] Loyola's formation program consists of dedicated dates for spiritual and emotional development. In addition to presentations by
the counselor, the program consists of Mass, Chapel exercises, Health and Wellness presentations, and individual conversations regarding academic progress.
[Health & Wellness home page] Loyola Academy views physical and mental health as integral
to the intellectual and spiritual development of our students. Our Health & Wellness
Program is dedicated to maintaining and improving the overall health of students through a variety of educational, counseling, and wellness programs.
[College Counseling home page] At Loyola Academy, College Counseling complements the personal growth
and development that students receive through Loyola’s Formation program.
It is our belief that the college search, application, and decision-making process should be student-focused, encompassing the ideals set forth through
our Jesuit mission of reflection and discernment. This means that this process takes time and effort and research. We know that you, as a Loyola Academy
student, are already busy with homework, sports, clubs, and activities. If you take charge of the college application process, though, you’ll learn
a lot about yourself and might just have fun doing it.
